RESEARCH SHOWS SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION IS THE TOP BUSINESS PRIORITY FOR 2009
3RD FEBRUARY 2009
SEO is seen as the key investment area this year according to the latest surveys of marketers - whether that's search engine optimisation for accountants, law firms, retailers or other industries.
Research just published reveals online marketing investment across all industries is forecast to grow for the sixth year running with most retailers making SEO their top priority for 2009.
The crucial importance of online marketing as the number one investment area for businesses was marked out in surveys of marketers, agencies and others by Alterian and Internet Retailer.
Highlights of the recent research:
- Almost two thirds of businesses are planning to increase their spend on online marketing.
- 72 percent of retailers say search engine optimization is their leading priority.
- More than 60 per cent of Internet retailers plan to develop online content such as microsites, online communities, blogs, forums, video and streaming media.
- About a fifth of firms cited their website as 'basic'.
- Pay-per-click advertising campaigns and email marketing were seen as the other key online investment areas.
Mark Chapman, Fuse's e-business marketing manager, said, "With the economy officially in recession, companies are recognising that to directly drive sales in these difficult times requires money to be spent on search engine optimisation."
He said it was a concern that some 20 per cent of those surveyed considered their website to be basic and not key to their marketing activities.
"There does appear to be a lack of understanding about the fundamental and vital role that a well-structured and designed website that is optimised for the search engines plays in helping companies achieve online success," he said.
